This transcript of our commentary is provided as a record of the play. It does not claim to be an authoritative ball by ball record, and nor should it be considered as such. Errors do occur in our coverage (rarely) and these are corrected on the final scorecard. Such corrections would not appear here. There are some gaps where connection from the ground was lost. Day 1 commentary

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

The 2nd day of the first test of this India-Pakistan Pepsi Test series will be underway in a little under 15 minutes from now. The crowd is slowly building up. India have got themselves into a good position here 48/0, effectively 190 behind with 10 wickets in hand. The crowd is certainly larger than it was at the same time yesterday. They would obviously be awaiting the performance from the two Ramesh's on show today, one of them making his debut, the other one we obviously know who. Six cops around the pitch area now. India would ideally want to get a lead in excess of 100, try and bowl out Pakistan cheaply to close out the match with time to spare. Pakistan would be looking forward to getting India out for less than 200-250, bat a lot better in the second innings and then use their bowling firepower to skittle out India in the 4th innings to win this test. As Shastri would have put it, a cracking day in store. The pitch hasn't behaved dangerously at all. It is not a flat pitch though. We did see Wasim and Waqar extracting life out of it yesterday evening. The Pakistani players troop out onto the field to loud cheers from this extremely sportive and wonderful crowd. Here are the umpires, to loud cheers obviously. And the loudest cheers of them all, reserved for Ramesh and VVS Laxman. Wasim Akram will start proceedings from the Indian Oil Stand end, which is the one opposite us Ramesh will face him. The anticipatory clapping again.

8.1 Wasim Akram to Ramesh, three runs, off the hips, poor fielding by
the sqleg fielder, what should have been a no run ball turned into
        3
       VVSL on strike
8.2 Wasim Akram to Laxman, no run, outside off, left alone
Surprisingly, for a man in his debut test, Ramesh took first strike
        last evening. No nerves ?
8.3 Wasim Akram to Laxman, no run, defended to midwicket
8.4 Wasim Akram to Laxman, no run, outside off, through to Moin
8.5 Wasim Akram to Laxman, FOUR, lovely drive through mid off
       Overpitched and took full advantage

1 slip, short leg, silly point, cover, mid on, mid wicket, mid off

9.3 Saqlain Mushtaq to Laxman, no run, back to the bowler

11.5 Saqlain Mushtaq to Ramesh, no run, defended, rolled off the pads
11.6 Saqlain Mushtaq to Ramesh, five runs, quick run, the cover fielder
had a shy at the stumps, overthrows resulted, needless really

12.2 Wasim Akram to Ramesh, two runs, went off the inside edge, Akram

Not fully forward, and Anwar having a dismissal similar to the
       first innings
No doubt about this one, cut back at the last moment. This wicket
will do wonders for Prasad's confidence, his first of the match

4.1 Srinath to Afridi, no run, defended
Ijaz is the new man in, perhaps Pakistan wouldnt like to send in a
night watchman, what with a maximum of 3-4 overs more possible
4.2 Srinath to Afridi, one run, driven hard and in the air to Ramesh
who doesnt catch cleanly, that will go down as a dropped chance
4.3 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, FOUR
Major discussion there, possibly about the light
The crowd isnt going to be too happy about this
Long shadows are extending across the ground
Could spin be the solution ?
Pakistan had an atrocious over rate of 13 per hour
       And they do continue
4.4 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, defended, goes across his stumps
4.5 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, FOUR, over pitched and crashed it through

6.4 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, defends off the backfoot
6.5 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, good bouncer, Ijaz shaped to hook
did nothing right there as the ball swung away
For the statistic mongers, Afridi's highest scores have come in
        this test, both innings 11
6.6 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, two runs, punched off the backfoot through

Quite inexplicable, not more than 2 overs to go and no sign of
        Kumble yet

7.1 Prasad to Afridi, no run, defended to covers
7.2 Prasad to Afridi, one run, turned to sqleg
Azhar was placed for a mistimed hook but that was not to be

This is Afridi's highest test score beating his 11 in the first
        innings
Kumble can wait, here is Srinath

8.1 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, outside off, left alone
8.2 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, pushed to mid off, off the backfoot.
Surprise, no cheers for Tendulkar's fielding
The duck definitely had something to do with this
8.3 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, backfoot defense to cover
8.4 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, outside off, left alone
Batting last might turn out to be quite tricky on this pitch. 200+
would be quite difficult, bounce isnt exactly even, turn too
8.5 Srinath to Ijaz Ahmed, no run, bouncer, Ijaz sways away
       Appeal again
       Bad light again appealed for
       Steve Dunne practices his stance
       Long wait here
       And that, unfortunately, is play
bad light appealed for and given
       The crowd doesnt protest though

Match State: Close of play, Day 2

Pakistan lead by 18 runs with 9 wickets in hand.
