PIETERMARITZBURG, South Africa, Dec 21 (AFP) - South African A side's trialists Sven Koenig and Boeta Dippenaar acquitted themselves well Monday against the West Indies, contributing 69 in their side's first innings 188 for four at close of play on the third day of the four-day fixture.

The West Indies were dismissed for 375 shortly before lunch, while the South Africans require another 38 runs to avoid the follow-on.

Koenig in particular made the most of the opportunity by putting a solid 52 on the scoreboard. He started off cautiously, but went on to make his fifth half century of the season off 127 deliveries.

Five balls later he was out mistiming an on-drive off Hooper straight to Darren Ganga at mid-on.

Dippenaar did not last nearly as long in scoring 17. The 21-year-old Free Stater had struck three excellent fours when he edged a Dillon delivery to Hooper at second slip.

It took the better part of two and a half days for the hard-working South African A's to shut down the West Indies' first innings just before lunch=2E

The bulk of their imposing total was provided by Shivanarine Chanderpaul, who scored a magnificent 182, but the West Indies tailenders also chipped in some useful contributions.

The tourists only blemish was when Rawl Lewis was caught for eight by Shafiek Abrahams at second slip in the third over of the morning.

Justin Kemp and Lance Klusener were the South Africans' most successful bowlers, Kemp taking three wickets for 54 in 22 overs, while Klusener managed three for 81 from 28 overs.

The tourists, 2-0 down in a five-Test series, are using the match against South Africa's second stringers to play themselves into form ahead of the third Test which starts in Durban on December 26.
