Sri Lankans (281-3) bt Worcs (279-6) by 7 wkts

THE first one-day match of their tour presented Sri Lanka in some of their World Cup winning splendour, even to the point of turning a century by Graeme Hick into a lost cause.

Worcestershire scored at 5.58 per over, including Hick's hundred off 98 balls, and yet found themselves well short. Sri Lanka reached 116 for one in 15 overs, Sanath Jayasuriya hitting 60 from 55 balls. The exploitation of fielding restrictions made the rest easy with 115 required from the last 25.

Marvan Atapattu cruised to 68 and no special demands were placed on Aravinda de Silva in his undefeated 73.
