Tour match: New Zealand 'A' v Pakistanis at Lincoln, 3-5 Mar 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 10:30am local time (2130 GMT)

welcome to Bert Sutcliffe Oval at Lincoln for the tour match
between New Zealand 'A' and Pakistan
it's an overcast morning here, but with no wind to speak of,
there's no immediate threat of disruption, so we'll be getting
        underway on time
the outfield is a picture, and the pitch is quite green, so should
certainly suit the side bowling first with the overhead conditions
as they are, with Pakistan leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed commenting
that it would turn on day one however
New Zealand 'A' captain Jacob Oram has won the toss and elected to
bowl first, what was happening was a foregone conclusion with
Pakistan looking to bat first anyway
with some joking it would be a toss by agreement, but they went
ahead and did it officially anyway
Pakistan are playing all three of the new players brought over,
Younis Khan, Humayan Farhat (who takes over the gloves from Moin
Khan who is 12th man, while Waqar Younis takes over the
        leadership), and Arshad Khan

21.1 Mushtaq Ahmed to Vincent, one run, the adventurous Vincent is happy
to sweep no matter what the ball or the situation, does it well on
this occasion, lapping a full and straight ball on off stump down
        to fine leg
21.2 Mushtaq Ahmed to Sulzberger, no run, flighted up full outside off
stump, stroking it straight out to extra cover
21.3 Mushtaq Ahmed to Sulzberger, no run, stretches well forward,
defending a straight flighted ball away in close on the off side
21.4 Mushtaq Ahmed to Sulzberger, no run, beaten! the googly which turns
away from the left-hander, and a beauty it was too, Sulzberger
nibbled at it, and it draws a huge appeal for caught behind, led
emphatically by Mushtaq, but turned down by umpire Hill
21.5 Mushtaq Ahmed to Sulzberger, three runs, shorter ball, Sulzberger
swivels on the crease to pull it down through forward square leg,
        just overhauled inside the boundary
21.6 Mushtaq Ahmed to Vincent, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
Vincent fails to pick the googly as it turns back sharpyl, just
missing the off stump, big howls of anguish from the Pakistanis,
moreso from Mushtaq, as it came perilously close to the wicket

and as it so happens, it turns out to be the last tantalising
delivery of the day's play, as the clock just ticks over to 6pm
and they walk off the field
it was a funny old day's play, never quite got going in the
conditions which remained overcast throughout, simply differing
        shades of grey
the Pakistanis bore the brunt of a green first day wicket, as
wickets tumbled frequently and they, like the day, never quite got
        going at any stage
all four New Zealand medium quicks bowled excellent lines,
regularly beating the bat at will, with Drum most impressive, but
Penn and Mills backing up solidly
the New Zealand 'A' batsman came out with a bit more purpose in
reply, but could've been in far more trouble had Imran Farhat held
on to a couple of relatively simple chances in the slips
Waqar battled away for a strong 10 over spell, while Mohammad Sami
looked very sharp and was well rewarded with 2 wickets just to
keep the home team in check
but they still sit in a very good position, just trailing by 34
with 7 wickets in hand after just one of three days play
we may now have a rough shot at a result being a possibility here,
thanks to 13 wickets falling on the opening day, and no signs of
the pitch 'de-greening' for the batsmen
Pakistan's only worry may be that they've come into this match with
just two pace men, along with three spinners, however it is a tour
match and some of their fold are suffering from illness or injury,
and some just need a good rest
that's all from CricInfo at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln, please

and that is indeed lunch, ending a most interesting session which
saw 119 runs and 4 wickets in the space of 32 overs
Vincent and Oram added 84 runs in the space of 14 overs, exactly
run-a-ball, taking to Mushtaq in particular, but also Saqlain in
his first four overs at the bowling crease, and Sami in his fourth
        spell
and looked highly threatening to take New Zealand 'A' well beyond
Pakistan's reach if it continued for too much longer, but Saqlain
produced a magic spell of nine balls which saw three wickets fall
and has brought Pakistan right back into this match, if they can
        finish off the tail smartly

New Zealand 'A' finish up with a lead of 178 runs, very useful, but
at a few stages during their innings looked capable of scoring
many more, but for Saqlain's fine burst which halted the middle
        order's strong progress
with Saeed Anwar off the field with a groin strain for the entire
post-lunch period, he won't be able to come out to open, so it's

4.3 Drum to Saleem Elahi, no run, props half forward in defence, quick
full ball seams back in, taking the front pad and drawing a loud

and a nice village green type crowd are stretched out around the
ground with many cars up on the embankment and people in deck
chairs, probably upwards of 500, a very nice atmosphere

fine for Mills at long leg, bringing up the Pakistan 100
24.3 Penn to Imran Farhat, one run, shortish straight ball on leg stump,

25.2 Walker to Imran Farhat, no run, tries to sweep a flighted ball on

26.2 Drum to Younis Khan, two runs, short outside off stump, cut
strongly down through the gully, Oram makes a fair partial stop
diving to his right, slowing a certain boundary's pace past him,
Stead chases it down from point, restricting them to two
26.3 Drum to Younis Khan, no run, ducks underneath a short ball through
        to the keeper
26.4 Drum to Younis Khan, no run, and another bouncer, this one's even
shorter, ducks well clear to leave it through to the keeper

lifting straight ball, defends from the leading edge back down the
        pitch
26.6 Drum to Younis Khan, no run, props forward in defence, drops it
down in close on the off side of the pitch, skips forward looking

it down to Stead at short cover
27.4 Walker to Imran Farhat, OUT: flighted up full and straight, goes
for a big lofted shot over midwicket, but doesn't get on to it
well as it's not quite full enough, gaining a big top edge
straight up towards Mills who lines it up at deepish wide mid on,
        taking it safely

Imran is annoyed with himself as he throws his wicket away with
just 6 minutes to go until stumps, and after having played so well
up until this stage, but went for one big shot too many, playing
        across the line
Saqlain Mushtaq the new batsman, still no sign of Saeed, whose
groin injury must just be too bad to bat today
27.5 Walker to Younis Khan, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
stroked off the back foot up towards Mills at mid off
27.6 Walker to Younis Khan, no run, quicker ball flighted through,
stifled appeal for lbw from a couple of fielders but not the
bowler as it strikes the pad well outside the line of off stump

Saqlain Mushtaq 0* (0b) Younis Khan 3* (18b)

there'll only be enough time for one final over here today, as
Oram, Drum and a couple of other players convene to discuss
tactics, eating up a little more time
New Zealand 'A's over rate has been rather slow today, but with no
over requirements in this match, it's not important
28.1 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, ducks underneath a bouncer, a
        fairly quick one
28.2 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, good nasty short rising delivery
on off stump, Saqlain fends from the crease, dropping the bottom
hand off the bat, as it's played down towards Gaffaney at point
28.3 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, shortish ball on off stump, stands
tall on the crease, defending down on the off side of the pitch
28.4 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, ducks underneath the second
bouncer of the over, umpire Hill signals that Drum can't bowl any
more this over or he will be no-balled
28.5 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, oooh! Saqlain has a big ugly swipe
across the line, trying to pull a shortish ball outside off stump
through midwicket, misses completely through to the keeper
a rather injudicious stroke considering the state of play and with
one ball remaining in the day's play
28.6 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, one run, full outside off stump, squeezed
out through vacant cover for an easy single with the shot,
Gaffaney fields from point, and that ends the second day's play

Saqlain Mushtaq 1* (6b) Younis Khan 3* (18b)

another day with plenty happening on it, a lot more runs than
yesterday, with 320 coming from 83.5 overs, and another 11 wickets
        falling
Pakistan still in a bit of trouble, trailing by 70 overall, with
just 6 second innings wickets in hand, and Saeed Anwar under an
injury cloud still to possibly bat or maybe not
Oram, Vincent and Imran Farhat were undoubtedly the batting
highlights of the day, with the nod perhaps going to Vincent whose
57 was a touch of class, whilst the other two had moments of
        chance
the bowlers had it harder as the pitch flattened out and became a
much truer surface, with some spin coming through for Saqlain who
took four wickets after a poor start
it may be only a three-day game, but there must be a fair chance of
a result tomorrow considering Pakistan have a longish tail and
only one recognised injury-free batsman left, who is at the crease
        already, and Saeed doubtful
please join us for what is shaping up to be a very intriguing final
day's play, starting at 10:30am local time (2130 GMT)
but until then, it's goodbye from CricInfo at Bert Sutcliffe Oval
at Lincoln, any comments about today's coverage you may have,

29.4 Penn to Saqlain Mushtaq, FOUR, driving at a full ball outside off

        third man boundary
29.5 Penn to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, shortish ball on off stump, stands
tall to defend down into the covers

30.1 Drum to Younis Khan, no run, good shortish ball on off stump,
squares Younis around in defence, squirting it away safely towards
        cover point
30.2 Drum to Younis Khan, no run, short ball outside off stump, leaves
the bat back out of the way through to the keeper
30.3 Drum to Younis Khan, no run, similar again, leaves a short ball
outside off stump through to the keeper
30.4 Drum to Younis Khan, one run, shortish ball on off stump, stands
tall to tap it down into the covers, good sneaky quick single
taken as Walker charges up from mid off to field, underarming it
through to Nevin and the bail's down, but Saqlain's safely home
30.5 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, drives and misses at an enticing
length delivery outside off stump, it certainly invited the drive
though Saqlain never got the front foot to it
30.6 Drum to Saqlain Mushtaq, no run, good shortish ball cutting back in
off the seam, takes Saqlain high up on the pad as he's squared
around by it, half-hearted appeal for lbw from the New Zealand
'A's, turned down by umpire Hill

31.1 Penn to Younis Khan, OUT: shortish ball outside off stump, Younis
steps forward in defence but then tries to whip the bat back out
of the road, but can't do so in time, dragging it back on to his
stumps from the underface of the bat

trouble with the last established batsman gone, and still no sign
of Saeed coming in to bat as Mushtaq Ahmed walks to the crease
31.2 Penn to Mushtaq Ahmed, OUT: and what a brute to receive first up!
short lifting delivery on off stump, Mushtaq hops up to try and
fend it away, but pops a top edge straight up in the air, Vincent
charges in from third slip and takes an easy catch behind the

come out and face it and Pakistan are in tatters
four slips, short cover and short leg in place for the hat-trick
        ball
31.3 Penn to Waqar Younis, two runs, a bit too full, Waqar drives
impressively first up, stroking it away through cover for an easy
couple, not a bad way to avert the hat-trick ball
31.4 Penn to Waqar Younis, no run, lovely shortish ball cutting away
outside off stump, beats the defensive blade through to the keeper
31.5 Penn to Waqar Younis, two runs, shortish lifting straight ball,
Waqar's on to the pull, dragging it down well through vacant wide
mid on, Stead from under teh helmet has to go chase, but Walker
beats him to it from mid off
31.6 Penn to Waqar Younis, two runs, short straight ball, Waqar again on
to the pull, lofting it over midwicket, not timing it well but
having sufficient power behind it to lob safely into the outfield,
Mills chases it down from mid on

capitulation! Saqlain has an almighty slog across the line and
middle stump is sent cartwheeling out of the ground, spectacular
stuff if uninspiring for the tourists' hopes going into the first

being protected in the hope of being fit enough to play in the
first Test starting in 3 days time
so Pakistan are now effectively 8 down, and still trail by 59
32.2 Drum to Arshad Khan, no run, full on off stump, watchfully stroked
back down the pitch on the off side
32.3 Drum to Arshad Khan, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, has a
wafty wave at it but misses, through to keeper Nevin

        through to the keeper
32.5 Drum to Arshad Khan, OUT: oh boy - this is a riot! full and quick
on off stump, Arshad drives all over the top of it and this time

33.2 Penn to Waqar Younis, one run, full outside off stump, has a wild
swing at it, getting a big thick inside edge down to Drum down at

33.3 Penn to Mohammad Sami, OUT: and it's all over! Sami steers a good

Pakistan 9 down and Saeed Anwar won't come out to bat, so they fold
for just 124, losing their last 5 wickets for 16 in the space of
27 balls and 26 minutes, remarkable stuff
New Zealand 'A' come together, very happy in their short morning's
work, a few shakes of the hands and a few hugs, completing a
mighty innings and 54 run victory in surprisingly short time
Pakistan become their second international scalp in the last few
years, after the 'A's also defeated England in 1996/97 at Wanganui
what Pakistan will take out of this match is uncertain, as only
Imran Farhat of the batsman made more than 23 in either innings of
the match, and looked very useful before gifting his wicket away
just before stumps last night, which was probably the
       early death knell
they will take more heart out of their bowling effort whith Waqar
looking far more likely, building up some good pace, after
struggling a little in the One-Day International series prior,
while Saqlain seemed to get it together after an initial bad patch
in a limited opportunity situation for spinners on this wicket,
while the most encouraging prospect must be the impressive
Mohammad Sami, who generated great pace, faster than Waqar by
players' accounts, and certainly tickled up the odd batsman, most
notably match top-scorer Jacob Oram, though he will have to watch
his front foot, which saw 10 no-balls called from his bowling
Drum finishes up with fine match figures of 8-85 from 28.4 overs,
keeping himself well in contention as cover for the Test team if
there are injury worries, while Penn also didn't do his chances
any harm by taking 7-69 in 27.3 overs
that wraps up today's very brief action from Bert Sutcliffe Oval in
Lincoln, please join us for full live coverage of the first Test
at Eden Park in Auckland, starting on Thursday the 8th at 10:30am
        local time (2130 GMT)
it's been a most fascinating contest here at Lincoln, finishing in
barely over two days, let's hope the first Test lasts a little bit
longer with some more fight with an injected Pakistan side gaining
back a few more of their top players rested/injured/
       ill for this match
until then, it's goodbye from CricInfo at the picturesque home of
