(3rd Test: Colombo, 29 Aug - 2 Sep 2001)

Mahela Jayawardene is a class batsman. In Kandy he had given the Indian bowlers the warning signals with a brilliant hundred. Jayawardene played yet another innings of style and substance, a cracking 139 off 216 balls, with the help of 14 boundaries and a massive six. This was Jayawardene's seventh hundred in Test match cricket. He shared a fourth wicket stand of 58 runs with Arnold (30). Liyanage (3) failed with the bat. Jayawardene had his slice of luck in his knock, dropped by Dighe off Bahutule. Dighe made things easy for the Lankans by messing up two catches and a stumping chance.
