The final Test of the 1952-53 India-West Indies series saw Vijay Manjrekar don the wicket-keeping gloves for the only time in his Test career. India, already 1-0 down in the five-Test series, were placed under further pressure when they conceded a 264-run first-innings lead.

With the score reading 80 for one in the second innings, Manjrekar strode out to the middle to join Pankaj Roy. Displaying the excellent command over technique that had already caught the eye of the discerning, Manjrekar, in the company of Roy (150), mounted an impressive recovery. The 237-run second-wicket partnership between the duo went a long way in helping India save the match.

The 118 runs that Manjrekar scored in the course of the stand made him the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a hundred in an away Test. It also made him, at 21 years and 186 days, the youngest wicket-keeper to score a hundred in the longer version of the game. That was until an even younger Ajay Ratra made 115 in the recently concluded fourth India-West Indies Test at Antigua.
