- It was the 1537th ODI in cricket history.
It was the 79th meeting between the two sides. Pakistan has won
48, India 27, while 4 matches were abandoned.Sameer Dighe was making his ODI debut. He became the 126th player
and 13th 'specialist' 'keeper to play for India.Sachin Tendulkar became the fourth Indian to captain his side in a
World Series Cup match after Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Mohammad
Azharuddin. Tendulkar, however, became the first Indian to lose his
debut match as captain in the WSC. Both Gavaskar and Kapil won their
first match as captain while Azharuddin was involved in a tie.Saurav Ganguly, when on 31, completed 1000 runs in matches against
Pakistan. He became only the third Indian after Mohammad Azharuddin
(1582 runs in 61 matches) and Sachin Tendulkar (1138 runs in 37
matches) and 12th batsman overall to do so. Ganguly took 29 matches
(and 26 innings) to reach this target, which is the fastest by any
Indian. Sachin Tendulkar had taken 34 matches and 32 innings to do
so.The wicket of Kanitkar was Saqlain's 54th against India in his
34th match. He has now taken more wickets against India than any other
bowler in the world. The previous record was held by another
Pakistani, Aaqib Javed, with 53 wickets in 39 matches.Javagal Srinath was dismissed for the 13th time in his career
without scoring. With this he equalled Kapil Dev's Indian record of
most ducks in a career. However it took him 48 matches less to equal
Kapil's record. Incidentally Anil Kumble with 12 ducks in 185 matches
and Sachin Tendulkar with 12 ducks in 230 matches are just behind
Srinath. It was also Srinath's sixth duck against Pakistan. Now only West
Indian Gus Logie has aggregated more ducks against Pakistan - seven in
49 matches.Shahid Afridi was dismissed for the seventh time without scoring
in a ODI-his third duck against India. He thus equalled Imran Khan and
Saqlain Mushtaq's tally of most ducks for Pakistan against India. Just
for the record, Sri Lankan Romesh Kaluwitharana (4 ducks in 22
matches) holds the record of scoring most ducks in a career against
India.Yousuf Youhana's wicket was the 50th for Srinath against
Pakistan. He was playing his 32nd match. Srinath became the first
Indian and fourth bowler overall to do so after West Indians Curtly
Ambrose (67 wickets in 40 matches), Courtney Walsh (65 wickets in 52
matches) and Ian Bishop (52 wickets in 31 matches).Srinath (4-49) captured four wickets in a match for the sixth time
in his career. Srinath thus equalled Manoj Prabhakar's tally. Now only
Anil Kumble(8) has taken more four wicket hauls than him for India. The defeat was India's third off the last ball of the match while
defending a target. The other two occasions were against Pakistan at
Sharjah on 18-04-1986 and against England at Jaipur on 18-01-1993.It was the third occasion of a team winning a match off the last
delivery in a day-night match while chasing a target. Australia had
beaten West Indies at Sydney on 01-01-1997 and South Africa had beaten
New Zealand at Napier on 26-03-1999.The defeat was the fourth narrowest for India by wickets margin.
Interestingly all these defeats came against Pakistan. India had lost
by one wicket at Sharjah on 18-04-1986 and by 2 wickets at Calcutta on
18-02-1987 and at Toronto on 17-09-1996.Pakistan has now played 10 matches in a row without facing a
defeat, which equals its best sequence in ODIs. Pakistan had not lost
a match from 27-04-1990 to 13-11-1990 in 10 consecutive matches.
Infact it had won all the 10 matches during this period. It was Pakistan's first win over India in four matches on
Australian soil.Yousuf Youhana won MoM award for the second time in his career.
His only other award came against Scotland at Chester-le-Street on
20-05-1999 in a World Cup match.
