  • It was the 1723rd ODI in cricket history.
  • It was Australia's 483rd and England's 329th match.
  • It was the 69th match between these two sides. The record now reads : Australia 36, England 31,tied one and abandoned one.
  • It was the 27th match between these two sides in England. Both sides have won 13 matches each, while one match was tied.
  • Alec Stewart was captaining England for the 38th time in his career which takes him past Mike Gatting's tally. Now only Graham Gooch (50) and Mike Atherton (43) have led England in more matches than Stewart .
  • Darren Gough equalled Ian Botham's English record of most wickets in a ODI career when he had Steve Waugh plumb in front of wickets. This was Gough's wicket number 145 in the shorter version of the game. However he needed 93 matches as against Botham's 116 to become leading wicket taker for his country.
  • Alec Stewart was getting out without scoring for the second time in succession. This was also 11th duck in his career which gives him the dubious distinction of the batsman with most ducks in a career for England. Stewart was previously at level with Graeme Hick with 10 ducks.
  • Adam Gilchrist snapped up his 150th catch behind the stumps when he helped dismiss Alan Mullally off the bowling of Ian Harvey. He was playing in his 111th such match. Gilchrist is the second Australian - Ian Healy being the other - and fourth wicketkeeper in all to have completed 150 catches in a ODI career.
  • England's total (86) is its lowest ever in ODIs. Its previous lowest was 93 also against Australia at Leeds on 18-06-1975.
  • England has now faced defeat in nine consecutive matches - its worst ever losing streak. The previous record was of eight matches from 25-10-1989 to 23-05-1990. The following table lists the longest losing streaks in ODIs :
