Australia v Sri Lanka

At Hobart, January 21

15-Apr-2000
At Hobart, January 21. Sri Lanka won by three wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka notched their first win but relations with their hosts soured. The Australians were suspicious when Ranatunga, citing a muscle strain, asked for a runner; the umpires allowed it, and he made a superbly paced 45 to win with three balls to spare. Sri Lanka were coasting to victory while Atapattu, dropped on 23 by Mark Waugh, and Kaluwitharana were adding 116. But from a comfortable 178 for three, they were made to fight as Warne whipped out three batsmen.
Australia's total was below par after only 34 came from the first 15 overs, though Mark Waugh and Lehmann later completed fifties. Ponting had been omitted, on his state ground, after a bar brawl, and the match ended Steve Waugh's brief comeback; his hamstring injury returned, and Warne resumed the captaincy in the field.
Man of the Match: M. S. Atapattu. Attendance: 10,680.
