Big hundred from Tiwary helps Bengal dominate

A career-best 182 by Manoj Tiwary, his maiden first-class hundred in just his ninth game, helped Bengal to an imposing 540 for 6 at the end of the second day's play at Eden Gardens. Hammering 21 fours and a six in his 309-ball knock Tiwary ground Mumbai's bowlers to the ground. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, resuming on 87 overnight, also completed his hundred while Laxmi Ratan Shukla chipped in with 65, rounding off a forgettable day for Mumbai on the field. Three of the nine bowlers used - Swapnil Hazare, Nilesh Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar - conceded hundred runs or more each.
Led by their openers Ravneet Ricky and Karan Goel, Punjab ended the second day on a commanding 321 for 2, with a 115-run lead, against Gujarat at Mohali. Ricky led the way with an unbeaten 142, while Goel, in only his third game, was unlucky to fall five short of his maiden ton. The pair added 201 before Hitesh Majumdar, the only wicket-taker in the day, dismissed Goel. Ricky remained steady at the other end, sharing stands of 47 and an unbeaten 73 with Muneesh Sharma and Gaurav Gupta respectively.
Haryana ended the second day struggling at 176 for 6 at Mysore, still 195 behind Karnataka's first-innings score of 371. The batsmen were guilty of not converting their starts as B Akhil and KP Appanna picked up wickets at regular intervals. Resuming on 301 for 6, Karnataka lost early wickets as left-arm seamer Sanjay Budhwar cut through the lower order, reducing them to 328 for 9. However, Vinay Kumar counterattacked with a 63-ball 48 to give Karnataka the upperhand.
A resolute performance by Hyderabad's lower order lifted them to 385 against Rajasthan at Jaipur. The last five wickets added 141 - with Inder Reddy, Kaushik Reddy and Pragyan Ojha gritted it out. Mohammad Aslam, the Rajasthan left-arm spinner, continued his good performance from the previous day, picking up his eighth five-wicket haul. In their reply, Rajasthan lost the early wicket of Dishant Yagnik but Gagan Khoda and Nikhil Doru steered them to a comfortable 92 for 1 at stumps.
Connor Williams missed a well-deserved double-century by just two runs but it was enough to lift Baroda to 406 against Saurashtra at Rajkot. Resuming on 267 for 5, Baroda were in danger of folding early when Yousuf Pathan was dismissed at 307 for 7. But Rajesh Pawar (33) provided good support, adding 66 with Williams. Sandeep Jobanputra, the left-arm seamer, as the most effective Saurashtra bowler, ending with four wickets. Sagar Jogiyani led Saurashtra's reply with 58 while Shithanshu Kotak, remained unbeaten on 53 as they ended on 122 for 2 at stumps.
Tanmay Srivastava and Praveen Kumar produced contrasting half-centuries as Uttar Pradesh edged ahead on the second day at Delhi. Having restricted Delhi to 299, UP stumbled early on but recovered through the 82-run stand between Srivastava and Kumar to take a 93-run lead. Srivastava managed ten fours in his 166-ball knock while Kumar, who was dropped twice, slammed five fours and three sixes. Earlier in the day, Aakash Chopra, resuming on 128, completed a memorable 150.
Opening batsman M Vijay Krishna struck his maiden first-class hundred, in only his second game, and ended on a fine 179 to help Tamil Nadu reach 474 for 9 on the second day at Chennai. Resuming at 260 for 4, Vijay and Sreedharan Sharath kept the scoreboard ticking at a fair clip and their 143-run partnership boosted Tamil Nadu's chances. Vijay's knock included 18 fours and two sixes and was sculpted in 386 balls. S Vidyut capped off a fine day for Tamil Nadu, leaving Andhra struggling at 21 for 1.
