South Africa warmed up nicely for the series decider against England at The Oval on Thursday, by enjoying much the better of their rain-affected tour match at Derby.
Jacques Kallis continued his fine vein of form by converting his overnight 141 into a double-century, but the innings of the day was played by South Africa's 22-year-old reserve wicketkeeper, Thami Tsolekile.
Tsolekile cracked 10 fours and a six in 112 balls, before falling just 10 runs short of his maiden first-class century. Both men were eventually dismissed by Derbyshire's offspinner Nathan Dumelow, who finished with 2 for 65 from 14.1 overs. Paul Havell, who had made such a spectacular impact on Friday, was unable to add to his four wickets.
When it came to Derbyshire's turn, Steve Stubbings and Luke Sutton made a pair of 40s, but the star man was South Africa's left-arm seamer Charl Willoughby. He had failed to impress in his solitary Test of the series, at Edgbaston, but today he dented Derbyshire's top order with figures of 3 for 31 in 14 overs. His performance increased the pressure on Dewald Pretorius, who went for nearly five an over, but did remove Stubbings for 44.
