Shane Watson enjoyed the best week of his county career when he combined a Championship double-century with a one-day victory in the C&G Trophy at Lord's. While talk of his possible selection for Australia grew, Watson had not heard from the national selectors after adding 25 and three wickets on Saturday - Andy Bichel also collected three victims - to push Hampshire to the 18-run limited-overs victory over Warwickshire.
However, Watson's most impressive moment was striking an unbeaten 203 in the County Championship at the time most critics were mulling over possible changes to the team for the fifth Test at The Oval on Thursday. By Monday his performances had not convinced an obdurate selection panel, and instead it was Hampshire toasting the allrounder's value.
Watson's double-century included 25 fours and one six as Hampshire beat Warwickshire by an innings at Southampton, and he backed up with a wicket in each bowling display. Bichel claimed three victims in a victory that jumped them back to second in the Division One with two matches remaining.
At Cardiff, David Hussey's Nottinghamshire earned a 3.5-point buffer over Hampshire with an eight-wicket victory against the relegated Glamorgan. Hussey made 1 in the first innings and was not required in the second.
Stuart Clark added four wickets for Middlesex as they battled to avoid the drop into the Division Two against Gloucestershire, whose relegation was confirmed at Bristol. Clark took 1 for 38 and 3 for 57 but it was Ed Joyce's hundred that eased their fears and the battle with Surrey to remain in the top competition.
In the Division Two, Derbyshire missed securing their first Championship victory since 2003 by three runs against Durham, who did not include Gary Pratt, the substitute fielder who ran out Ricky Ponting at Trent Bridge. Chasing 280 after Jimmy Maher had added 7 and 9 for Durham, Derbyshire finished at an agonising 6 for 277 at stumps on day four. Michael Di Venuto had scores of 5 and 36 while Jon Moss hit 92 in the first innings before being run out for 2 in the second.
Moss also had a successful game with the ball, taking seven wickets to out-point Brad Williams, the Western Australia fast man, who took four for Durham. Derbyshire are camped at the bottom of the table while Durham, who have only one game to play, have an eight-point lead over Lancashire.
Stuart Law's second century in as many matches could not prevent Lancashire from a bad loss as they were dismissed for 103 in the second innings against Northamptonshire. Law picked up 111 on a pitch rated as "dubious" as Lancashire earned a 12-run lead on first innings, but Northants piled on 400 at their second attempt to control the remainder of the game.
As the wicket spun heavily, Law was dismissed for 3, Andrew Symonds totalled 37 and 4, and Marcus North registered 30 and 9. Martin Love collected 44 and 11 for Northants and Damien Wright picked up four first-innings wickets.
