India targets highest ever placing in official Test table

India can overtake opponents New Zealand and move to fourth position in the ICC Test Championship table if it wins both matches in the forthcoming two Test series starting in Kanpur on 8 October

India can overtake opponents New Zealand and move to fourth position in the ICC Test Championship table if it wins both matches in the forthcoming two Test series starting in Kanpur on 8 October.
India has never been higher than fifth in the official Test table but a 2-0 home series win would improve its rating to 100, enough to secure fourth place, while New Zealand would fall to 98 and from third to fifth position.
Only a 2-0 win will be enough to ensure Sourav Ganguly's team climb the table. A 1-0 series win will increase India's rating to 98 but New Zealand would hold on to fourth spot with a rating of 100.
New Zealand currently lies third in the table with a rating of 106 after a consistent run of form that has seen it lose only two of its last 17 matches - a run that included a 2-0 home series victory over India in December 2002.
If New Zealand can emerge equally dominant on Indian soil it will improve its rating to 111 while a 1-0 victory will boost its rating to 108.
