Kenya v Australia
At Gymkhana, Nairobi, September 5
15-Apr-2003
At Gymkhana, Nairobi, September 5. Australia won by five wickets. Australia 4 pts. Toss: Kenya.
Australia's tactics in this dead match bordered on the patronising. Resting Gillespie and McGrath
was understandable, but the decision to shuffle the batting order was questionable and, for a
moment, they seemed to have shot themselves in the foot. When Warne fell, they needed 19 runs
from 14 balls, but sixes from Watson and Lee relieved the pressure, and they squeezed home with
five balls to spare. The all-rounder Watson was frustratingly slow, but stayed to finish the job with
an unbeaten 77. Neither Hayden nor Martyn batted. Earlier, Kenya's batsmen had restored some
credibility, with the flamboyant Odumbe striking a bold half-century. For the Australians, the
burgeoning off-spinner Hauritz took four for 39 in his first game of the series.
Man of the Match: M. O. Odumbe.
