Maynard resigns Glamorgan captaincy

Glamorgan will have a new captain next season after the decision of Matthew Maynard to stand down. Maynard became county captain at the end of 1995, and led Glamorgan to their third ever championship title in 1997.

"I've been thinking about this for some time and after captaining the side for 5 years I just felt that it is the right time to stand down," said Maynard.

"It is not a decision I have taken lightly" he continued, "but captaincy does take a lot out of you and in addition to spending more time with my young family I would like to concentrate on my playing form."

Maynard, who marked his county debut in 1985 with a belligerent century against Yorkshire, won a recall to the England team for the one day triangular series this summer following an excellent century in the Benson and Hedges final against Gloucestershire. . Even now, at the age of 34, there are very few finer batsmen in English cricket. He made his Test debut in 1988 against West Indies at the Oval but struggled to cement a place, and has not played a Test since 1993-94

Vice captain Steve James is the favourite to succeed Maynard as Glamorgan's captain.
