The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has revised the itinerary for the
Cable and Wireless Test and One-Day series against Zimbabwe and
Pakistan to accommodate the ICC Cricket Week, which will be held from
April 2-9.
The changes are necessary because of the All Stars day/night match
between Asia and the Rest Of The World that the International Cricket
Council (ICC) has now agreed will be played on April 8 as the
highlight of Cricket Week, a project supported by the United Nations.
The ICC requires the best players from the Test-playing countries to
be in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for that match.
As a result, several adjustments have been made to the One-Day
International and Test schedule for the tour of the West Indies by
Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
In addition, during the break for the ICC All Stars match, Pakistan
will play two One-Day practice games in Antigua on April 8 and April 9
and Zimbabwe will play a three-day practice match on April 8-10 in
Grenada.
Teams will be announced shortly for these matches.
WICB executive secretary Andrew Sealy said while there had been
speculation on the possible changes, the board was unable to make an
announcement until the final decision was made during the ICC meeting
that WICB president Pat Rousseau, vice-president Clarvis Joseph and
chief executive officer Stephen Camacho attended this week in
Singapore.
Sealy said the WICB regretted any inconvenience that the changes would
cause patrons, travel agents and others who would be affected.
However, he noted that the new itinerary for the Cable and Wireless
2000 series would in fact offer fans more cricket with the addition of
the three practice matches.
ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya said the Cricket Week project, which
had been lauded by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, was aimed at
promoting the world-wide awareness of the game, friendship and
development.
Dalmiya thanked the Test-playing countries for making adjustments to
their international calendars so that the best players could be made
available.
