Ryan Hinds escapes ban for misconduct

Ryan Hinds, the West Indies and Barbados middle-order batsman, will escape on a technicality a two-match ban for misappropriate conduct during the Carib Beer Challenge final in February. The Nation reported that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) confirmed the ban could not be enforced as it received the relevant report from the match referee after the stipulated two-week timeframe.
Under an agreement between the WICB and the West Indies Players' Association, any report of misdemeanour must be submitted within two weeks of the incident. Match referee Clarence Shaffarali's report of Hinds' misbehaviour during the final, between Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago, did not reach the WICB until June.
During the match, it was reported that both Barbados and T&T showed dissent towards several decisions from umpires Billy Doctrove and Norman Malcolm, prompting WICB director Deryck Murray to describe the behaviour as the worst he had seen in a regional match.
"I am happy that the air is cleared," a relieved and apologetic Hinds told Weekend Sport. "I am not condoning my behaviour, or that of any of us, in the final. It was an unfortunate situation. In the heat of the moment, sometimes the emotions get the better of you. As first-class cricketers it is important you keep your cool. This is a learning experience for me. I hope it is something that does not happen again.
"Being Barbados captain, there are certain rules and regulations that I have to follow. I want to apologise officially to the local and regional supporters for my behaviour and to people who see me as a role model."
Hinds admitted to new chairman of selectors Roddy Estwick that he made a mistake. "We want to have a closer relationship between the selectors and the board and players. The chairman is very supportive of me," Hinds said. "We have to remember who we are representing, that Barbados has a great history. I'm looking forward to being captain again. I enjoyed the pressures of being Barbados captain and it is something I want to continue doing."
Hinds is not part of West Indies' squad for the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa.
