WA defeats Queensland by 42 runs at WACA

Stand in skipper Simon Katich celebrated his Australia A call-up but fell short of proving it should have been to the national senior squad in Western Australia's 42 run one-day victory over Queensland at the WACA.

The Warriors made 7-237 before ripping through the Bulls line-up to have them all out for 196 with five overs to spare.

Katich, who was this week named as Australia A's vice-captain for the international one-day series warm-ups, led the way for the Warriors with a clever 70.

He passed 1000 runs for WA in domestic one-day cricket in the process but missed a golden opportunity to prove to the national selectors he belonged in the Australian team when he steered a lazy pull shot directly to Andrew Symonds off spinner Nathan Hauritz (2-40).

However, he displayed the captaincy qualities that had him earmarked from an early age as a possible leader with an intuitive decision to open the bowling with into-the-wind swing bowler Darren Wates ahead of regular front liners Jo Angel and Matthew Nicholson.

And Wates repaid the favour with 3-32, including the prized scalps of Stuart Law (8), Jimmy Maher (23) and Clinton Perren (0) during an inspired 10 overs. When his spell was over, Queensland was in trouble at 4-80.

Four overs later it was 4-117 and appeared to be cruising towards a victory after a vicious onslaught from Symonds (32) and James Hopes (40).

Symonds in particular was in a menacing mood.

He smashed a giant six off Nicholson (0-33) which landed in the second tier of the Lillee Marsh stand, earning one happy punter $1000 thanks to a brilliant catch.

Symonds followed it up in Kade Harvey's (0-35) second over by landing a straight drive into the second tier of the Prindville Stand at the opposite end of the ground.

But then Katich tossed Angel (2-33) the ball and the veteran responded by removing both dangermen to have the visitors in trouble at 6-133.

From there Australian one-day paceman Brad Williams (3-29) ripped through the Queensland tail to seal the match.

In WA's innings Australia A squad members Mike Hussey (28) and Ryan Campbell (20) failed to capitalise on solid starts.

First-year player Scott Meuleman gave the Warriors a quick start before he fell for 43 when he edged Hopes (1-23) to Wade Seccombe.

But failures to Chris Rogers (16), Rob Baker (7) and Nicholson (4) deprived the Warriors of the chance to build a formidable innings and left them at 6-200 before a late partnership by Brad Hogg (24no) and Harvey (12no) steered WA to 237.
