Waugh, Walsh, Chanderpaul battle injuries

PERTH - Steve Waugh joined a list of second Test casualties today when it was revealed he was battling a muscle strain.

The Australian cricket captain was receiving treatment on the injury to his left buttock, causing him problems during the clash with the West Indies in Perth.

Waugh complained about the injury yesterday and underwent a scan last night after he experienced discomfort in the field.

Team medical officials will review the injury throughout the Test but Waugh batted without a runner today, at least indicating he should be able to complete the match before he rests ahead of the third Test in Adelaide from December 15.

The Windies were battling more serious problems, prompting team management to call for a replacement for experienced batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

The 26-year-old withdrew hours before the Test with a stress fracture in his foot and selectors said they would name a replacement in the next 48 hours.

Management had not yet decided whether to send Chanderpaul home, but initial reports suggested he would be out for up to six weeks.

There was better news for veteran paceman Courtney Walsh, who was taken to hospital for X-rays today after hurting his right ring finger trying to stop a drive from Matthew Hayden.

Walsh was cleared of a fracture and returned to bowl after lunch, later taking the new ball in a welcome change of luck for the tourists.
