The West Indians returned to winning ways with a 10-wicket victory over Yorkshire at Leeds which would have built their confidence for the forthcoming Third Test Match at Manchester. With a lead of just 83 runs the bowlers inspired by Nixon McLean performed magnificently on a pitch which responded well.
The county were dismissed for 94 runs in 37 overs which left their opponents to make just 12 runs to win. This caused no difficulty ad included a six struck by Chris Gayle off James Middlebrook. The tourists had started the day at 83-4 which they took to 209 with useful contributions from Mahendra Nagamootoo (40 top-score from 74 balls) and Wayne Phillip (38).
The latter was lucky to be missed by David Byas at slip before he was off the mark, but later he hit Lesroy Weeks for six and hit another five fours from the 108 balls he faced.
Courtney Walsh had Simon Wippud caught at slip in his initial break-through, but, thereafter, Nixon McLean (5-48) dominated the attack. Yorkshire were soon 16-4 and by tea had sunk further to 30-5. Byas resisted again in hitting four fours in his 83 minutes before he, too, was caught from an edge off McLean with the home side still 12 runs behind. Weekes, whose excellent 6-65 had been the county's sole consolation, and Ian Fisher ensured that the West Indians would have to bat again.
