West Indies v New Zealand
At Gros Islet, St Lucia, June 8
15-Apr-2003
At Gros Islet, St Lucia, June 8. West Indies won by six wickets. Toss: West Indies.
West Indies inaugurated St Lucia's new stadium, built on a former cattle pasture under the
Beausejour hills at Gros Islet, with an exciting last-over victory. New Zealand made another
faltering start: Dillon bowled Astle with his sixth delivery, and Collins took three wickets in his
first nine. But Fleming stabilised the innings with Vincent, then supported the aggressive Styris
in a stand of 91 off 106 balls. Styris struck three sixes and seven fours, scoring at more than a
run a ball, as the last ten overs yielded 76. West Indies' response was built around Chanderpaul's
unbeaten 108, which anchored three successive half-century partnerships. He had scored both his
previous one-day international hundreds as an opener, and the decision to reprise the role after
13 months paid off handsomely before Lara hit the winning boundary with five balls to spare.
Paul Hitchcock's impressive medium-pace earned three wickets in his first bowl in an international.
Man of the Match: S. Chanderpaul.
