An X-ray examination of Nasser Hussain's right index finger confirmed that he will be fit to bat in the England second innings at Headingley. A nasty blow inflicted by Courtney Walsh during the first innings had raised concerns about Hussain's fitness.
The England captain has already missed the Lord's Test match earlier in the series as well as the first few matches of the NatWest triangular involving West Indies and Zimbabwe on account of a cracked left thumb.
Hussain was leg before to Walsh for 22 as England failed to press home the advantage after bowling out the West Indies for 172. The home side ended the day at 105/5, still 67 runs adrift, with Michael Vaughan and Graeme Hick as the only remaining specialist batsmen.
Craig White bowling on his home ground grabbed 5/57 but Curtly Ambrose stole the thunder later in the day by removing Michael Atherton for the 17th time to become the fifth member of the elite 400 wicket club. With 15 wickets crashing for 277 on the first day of this fourth Test match, it would be quite hazardous to predict which way the wind is blowing.
