Paul Best, the Warwickshire left-arm spinner, took 5 for 53 as Sri
Lanka reached 298 for 8 on a hard-fought opening day of the second
Under-19 Test at Scarborough. Nipun Karunanayake led the visitors'
batting with 90 but it needed the lower order to chip in after Best
had made steady breakthroughts.
Karunanayake and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (47) added 95 for the second wicket
as Sri Lanka, who lead the series after victory at Wantage Road,
reached 124 for 1 having opted to bat first. But then Best started to
make an impression Rajapaksa trapping lbw before claiming to middle-order
scalps. He then removed the key figure of Karunanayake with his third
lbw of the innings.
When the top-scorer fell Sri Lanka were 178 for 5 and wasting the
advantage of batting first, but useful innings from Denuwan Rajakaruna
(35) and Akshu Fernando (39) kept them afloat. Best claimed his fifth
wicket when he caught and bowled Rajakaruna although Sri Lanka's lower
order proved hard to shift as they added valuable runs.
